Krazy Kitchen Embroidery

December 13, 2008

While at Maker Faire 08, I took a little “demo” class with Jenny Hart of Sublime Stitching and fell in love with embroidery!!!

I found her booth and purchased some embroidery patterns from her booth.

It has been over a month and I decided to give them a try…

Aunt Pat had given me some Flour Sacks, but they too big for dish towels.  So, after washing them (to shrink them),  i cut them in half and hemmed the edges.

I decided to use the Krazy Kitchen pattern, so I ironed on the pattern onto my dish towel.

I started to embroider and here is how it turned out!

my feather headbands

December 4, 2008

I was bummed I wasn’t there to make the feather headbands with Jilly and Maureen.   Today I went to Hobby Lobby and was in pursuit of feathers!  I found the feather section and they had bags and bags of feathers!  I really liked the polka dot pheasant feathers.  Then i saw a feather pad (it has a piece of felt that the feathers are already attached to it.  So i began my solo project.

Here are my supplies: from top left

bag of feathers, feather pad, glue gun, assortment of headbands and a piece of felt.

The first one i made was the feather wide headband…I attached multiple feathers directly to the headband.

The next one, i took the polka dot feathers and attached them to the piece of felt…dsc03951

Then attached the pad to the headband.

Then the last one, I used the premade feather pad and just attached it to the headband…

I like how they all turned out.  I would like to experiment with other feathers.

Feather Fetish

I really got into the last season of Project Runway. I couldn’t help but notice all the different ways that Kenley wore feathers in her hair. While she wasn’t necessarily my favorite contestant on the show, I thought she really pulled it off.

Maureen and I got together last weekend and made some feather headbands of our own. We pulled out the glue gun and whipped up a pitcher of margaritas. We followed this tutorial from Craftstylish.

The first try was a dud…

We got it on the second try…

This was not hard at all.

Felt Club 2008

November 24, 2008

Last weekend I went to Felt Club, the biggest indie craft fair of Southern California. I did a full post about it on my other blog, Thisisthelast here.

Sommer pointed out to me that the LA Times did a full write up on Felt Club. You can read the article here. It was pretty interesting to read about Felt Club from an outsider’s opinion.

New Old Curtains

October 17, 2008

I have been trying to figure out what I can do to my living room to make it more cozy.  I went to the thrift store yesterday and found a pair of curtains in pumpkin orange and fell in love.  Then I went to Ross and found a cute curtain rod.

Before (no curtains on double doors)

After

In My Kitchen the sink is in direct sunlight and so when I wash my dishes in the afternoons, it is very uncomfortable.  At the thrift store yesterday I bought a couple old cute pillow cases to use as curtains.  I ripped out the seams and put the tension rod into the hem and put them up.

Before (no curtains over sink)

After

I think i might move them down a little bit.

Black & White Seat Cushions

October 13, 2008

I had been ogling these Pottery Barn seat cushions for a while.  But at $26 each and I would need 6, I just couldn’t do it.  I thought this would be a fun project to do with my mom.   I found a cute black and white canvas fabric from Wal-Mart.  I wanted a good cushion inside, since we spend a lot of time playing board games in our house.   I purchased a twin size memory foam mattress topper, and I cut that up for the cushions.

We started by making an outline of the shape of the seat.  That was our pattern that we worked from.  We cut out fabric and foam for one cushion, we would adjust the size of the pattern if it wasn’t quite right.  Our cushion consisted of top piece, bottom piece, piping sandwiched in the middle, and velcro ties in the back.

We were just about to start sewing the piping and we could not locate the zipper foot for my sewing machine.  We turned my house upside down, but to no avail.  We went to my mom’s house to see get her sewing machine, and she couldn’t find her zipper foot either.  We searched everywhere, so in the end we just had to go buy a new one.  Is there anything more frustrating then getting ready to start a project, and something little stops you from getting started?

Once we had the zipper foot we were rolling.  First, we sewed the piping.  Second we sewed the top, bottom, and piping together on the left side, bottom side, and right side.  That left the top open.  We sewed on the velcro ties and left a gap in the top to add in the foam.  Once the foam was in we hand sewed the little opening closed.

We ran into a few snags along the way.  But in the end it was all worth it.  I really like the way they turned out.

Glass Bauble Magnets

September 25, 2008

While the girls were in town, I saw some cute bauble magnets at Parts & Labour.  They were cute.  I figured i could probably make them myself.  I used  picnik to make the photos round and to put words on the image.  Then i cut them out the same shape as the bauble i was going to use.   (the baubles are all different shapes, round, oval, kidney)

Applied glue to it.

The glue enhanced the colors in the photo.

I applied pressure to the bauble to get any air bubbles out.

Then attached a magnet to the back.

The magnet i bought was self adhesive and on one sheet.  I had to cut them out (in order to not waste the magnet, the shapes are not all round)

Well, the magnet isn’t strong enough to hold the baubles.  I think i need thicker, stronger magnets.

Some of the magnets are hanging sideways and others keep slipping down the fridge.

I will update once i buy stronger magnets.

Updated: Bosom Buddies Keychain

September 4, 2008

On a previous post, i had made Breast Friend Necklaces.   After I posted the information, I realized there was a problem.  The boobs weighed too much for the eye pin and they slipped off!

I searched a couple stores for eye screws and finally found them at Lowes.

So, the necklace project has been converted from “Breast Friends Necklaces” to “Bosom Buddies Keychains“.

**Jilly – You don’t have to wear the boob around your neck, but you do have to put it on your keychain”
